The images from this report are available in digital form for viewing in two formats.  The JPEG images are sized for short download times but with lower resolution.  The TIF images are stand alone image files with much higher resolution .  Download times for these images will take upwards of 30 minutes with a 28.8 kbps dial-up connection.  They are best saved on your computer and viewed with a stand-alone image editor.

Fundus photographs from participants in the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) illustrating eyes in the age-related macular degeneration Categories 2 and 3. Photo A, Left eye in Category 2 shows nonextensive intermediate drusen, mostly located supertemporal to the center of the macula. No drusen is 125 um or greater in diameter, although some are 63 um or greater and their cumulative area is less than AREDS circle O-2 (about 0.2 disk areas). Photo B, one left eye in Category 3 depicts the lower limit of the caregory, having 1 large drusen (grater than or equal to 125 um) in the 8-o'clock position from the center of the macula, while another left eye (photo C) shows many large drusen (totaling at least 1 disk area) scattered throughout the macula.
